CPY Club Helps Bring Asian New Year Celebration to Newtown High School

Elmhurst, Queens — February 2026

This past week, CPY helped put together an Asian New Year event at Newtown High School. ✨🐎 The celebration brought together Newtown students and teachers for a large cultural show, with students from different Asian backgrounds sharing their heritage through music, dance, and storytelling.

CPY club president Elaina took the lead in organizing the event, and shared what made it so meaningful. "This is a large Asian New Year cultural show involving 100+ Newtown students and teachers. Students from different Asian backgrounds will be sharing their culture through music, dance and stories." She pointed to why representation like this matters in a neighborhood as diverse as Elmhurst: "It is meaningful because, in a community like Elmhurst, where so many immigrant and multicultural families live, people don't often get a chance to understand how many different Asian cultures there are. We are not all the same, we are all different."

Elaina's words capture exactly what the event set out to do — make diversity visible and personal, not just something seen in statistics. For the students who performed, it was a chance to feel proud of their heritage. For the wider Newtown School community, it was an invitation to learn, connect, and celebrate together in a welcoming space. Events like this remind us how powerful it is when young people lead the way in bringing their community closer together.
