Inside the Hope House Program
Last year in 2025, City Mission partnered with New Life Community Development Corporation to ask a simple question: what if wellness wasn't something you had to seek out alone? What if it happened in community, with other women who understood exactly what you were carrying?
That question became a pilot program at Boulevard Family Residence, a local family shelter in Elmhurst. The program then completed in 2026. Over nine months and three cycles, participants worked through social wellness, emotional and mental wellness, and physical wellness together, guided by female professionals and joined by City Mission volunteers who showed up not as experts, but as fellow participants.
The results spoke for themselves. Every single participant said they felt more connected to their community by the end. Every single one said they'd recommend the program to someone else. And maybe most tellingly, three women who completed the program moved on to permanent housing, and one landed a full-time job, real, tangible steps toward the stability this program was designed to support.
Elmhurst is one of the most diverse neighborhoods anywhere, but diversity alone doesn't guarantee connection. Connection has to be built, on purpose, one conversation at a time. Hope House isn't a program about fixing people. It's a program about reminding people they were never as alone as it felt.
As one participant put it: "Because of you guys, I have been a much better person in my relationship with others."
That's the whole mission, really. Not just wellness. Belonging.
